Video Devlog 2

Here's another video update for Darkest Blue.

Here, I play through a short level designed for the game, the spacecraft interior. This level requires the completion of a puzzle in order to progress to the next area. The puzzle requires the player to operate a machine to change the positioning of an otherworldly creature in another room. When the player aligns the creature with the target position and rotation, then the door is unlocked.

The creature was originally intended to be a statue, without movements or sounds. I ultimately added these elements to it, as I find that it is more unnerving to interact with a living organism which is aware of your presence. For the organism's sound design, I compiled several different monster sound effects, and I ran them through a vocoder in order to make them sound more robotic/alien. I'm considering redoing this with other sound effects, though.

For design elements of this level, I have been attempting to add smaller details into the scene by creating unusual shapes in ProBuilder and setting them into the walls. I also experimented with different types of lighting, and ultimately found that individual floor lights work well for the scene. I intend to bake the lighting into this scene once there are no more structural changes to be made.

Here are some of the resources I am using for this project:

  • HPSXRP
  • ProBuilder
  • Polybrush
  • Animation Rigging
  • Blender
  • Photoshop
  • Textures.com
  • Soundly
